Boys & Girls Club of Lower Naugatuck Valley Receives Grant from ExcEL Leadership Academy to Assist ELL Students

The collaborative effort between the ExcEL Leadership Academy and the Boys & Girls Club of Naugatuck Valley helps English Learners acclimate socially and academically to new communities and languages.

A grant from the ExcEL Leadership Academy to the Boys & Girls Club of Lower Naugatuck Valley has enhanced both the organization’s ability to improve the experience of English Learners in and out of the classroom. Directors of the Boys & Girls Club meet with Shelton teachers and administrators to coordinate services for the students they serve. Directors and mentors at the Boys & Girls Club are therefore better able to serve ELL students during the after-school hours. In return, teachers and administrators grasp a more holistic view of ELL students by learning about their lives outside the classroom from Boys & Girls Club representatives.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to provide every student, particularly those in need, with a safe and supportive environment to go after school every day. Members of the Club are provided with Nationally recognized programming to help them succeed in school. Adult mentors serve as a guiding hand in enabling students to develop important life skills and discover their potential in the arts and on sports teams.
