On Thursday, November 9, 2017 the ExcEL Leadership Academy at Shelton Public Schools held their first evening session of Parent University. Participants learned about the ExcEL grant and how the district is using it to address the needs of their children. The presentation emphasized how parents, teachers, and other school staff can form a partnership to help their children succeed in school. Participants learned how to navigate the school and district website to find valuable information. Staff members who attended the workshop assisted with translating the presentation and registering interested parents in Infinite Campus so they could track their children’s progress in the classroom. Parents received booklets with tips about what they could do to help their children at home and how they can prepare for upcoming parent-teacher conferences. They also received resources to assist with home to school communication. The high school student who submitted the winning entry for the Parent University logo contest, which was held before the close of the previous school year, was awarded her prize at the event. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents whose children attend different home schools to mingle and learn about the resources that are available to them and about the school staff whom they can contact for assistance.
